A downloadable game

An open source rewrite of Nicktropolis, made from screen capture footage of the lost game, with a dedicated public server.

On March 9, 2010 the Nick.com MMO Nicktropolis was discontinued and closed to the public. The virtual world lost to time, to the dismay of many of it's dedicated player base. Player's customized rooms, characters, fish and many friendships were lost overnight. Over the years there were some efforts to bring back Nicktropolis, and later to archive what was left, until 2017 when Nickelodeon closed access to the server that stored Nicktropolis's files.

In 2023, an experimental recreation of Nicktropolis, made from cropping and manipulating screen shots and video footage, showed a lot of potential and became a frantic effort. In just 14 days of development a build with a working multiplayer server, chat, and many rooms was released to a private discord server and a game-play video uploaded to Youtube. Over the course of that year the game was refined and many features added, with the goal of being as faithful to the original as possible. Users can add their own video files to play in the game, to replace the TurboNick CDN from the original game. Nickpoint blobs can be found throughout Nicktropolis locations, and you can spend them on items to customize your room. Ruffle.js, desmond emulator, and other modern technology allows players to play flash games from the original game in browser, and play real ROMs on a giant Nintendo DS. The remake includes the weekly treasure hunt, many preserved and recreated rooms, a public (not local!) multiplayer server to play with your friends and chat with the original chat safety filter, and more all reverse engineered from screen capture footage!
